Mattress Update!

Little Green Sheep LogoWe visited the Little Green Sheep showroom yesterday and were very impressed with their mattresses.

Picture of Organic Cot Bed MattressI was very surprised and delighted at the firmness of their Organic Wool mattress (£175 cot bed size) which I understand is because they have 3 layers of wool surrounding the coir inner. I was expecting it to be as squashy as a foam mattress but it was nice and firm.

This mattress is certified organic by the Soil Association and handmade in Wales. So we bought one!

Then we spent ages discussing the dilemma over bedding! It seemed mad to compromise the benefits of having an organic mattress with non-organic cot bed sheets that would use cotton treated with chemicals (pesticides etc). However, the Little Green Sheep organic bedding is made in Germany! I have managed to source an organic fitted bottom sheet made in the UK but cannot find any UK made organic flat top sheets. So I’m not sure what we are going to do about it!

Also we hadn’t really thought about the fact we’d need mattress protectors. Interestingly most mattress protectors cover most of the mattress but the ones designed by the Little Green Sheep company just cover the mattress top to allow more breathability. They also have a very clever polyurethane waterproof inner layer which stops the protector from making a crinkling noise!

So in the end we decided to just buy 2 Little Green Sheep organic mattress protectors (£58.95 twin pack) as it seemed to make sense! At least they are not made in China or India!

  1. Have you tried The Fine Cotton Company? They have a great range of organic cotton baby bedding.

  2. Hi Janie

Thank you for your suggestion. I’ve checked out The Fine Cotton Company and they do have some lovely organic baby bedding.

I couldn’t see any reference to where they were made so I emailed them to ask and received a reply almost immediately. Unfortunately they are made in Portugal and Italy – so although they are lovely, I still would like to find some that are made in the UK if I can.

Thanks again for posting a comment – I do appreciate your help!
