Mattress Madness!

Picture of Mothercare MattressAs you will know from my previous post on cot bed mattresses on 15th July (A Good Night’s Sleep!) we were thinking of buying the Mothercare Luxury Pocket Sprung Mattress. We really didn’t know what to look for in a cot bed mattress and this one we found at Mothercare is also made in the UK which is quite unusual and difficult to find in this shop!

Since then we have realised that this mattress will be full of man-made materials and chemicals. We have asthma and eczema running in both families so we need to make sure everything is as natural as possible to try to prevent our daughter from developing these health issues.

Little Green Sheep LogoNaturalmat LogoSo I started to look for cot bed mattresses made of natural materials and found 2 companies; Naturalmat and the Little Green Sheep.

Picture of Organic Cot Bed MattressPicture of Coco Organic Cot Bed MattressThey both sell natural and organic cot bed mattresses made in the UK and manufactured from coconut coir and wool. The mattresses are 100% chemical-free, naturally fire retardant, non-allergenic, breathable and anti-dust mite. Both come with a 5 year guarantee and conform to the British Standards for cot bed mattresses.

I found that the Little Green Sheep company is based only 27 miles away near Alcester in Warwickshire, so we have arranged to visit their showroom on Saturday to see the mattresses. I’ll update the blog if we decide to buy one!

There are 70 wipes in there standard pack and they also produce a smaller travel pack with 30 wipes.

Definitely a purchase for us!

Picture of Pink and White Gingham Lambswool Baby Blanket I was delighted to find that there are loads of gorgeous baby blankets that are made in the UK!

Picture of Pink Reversible Spot Lambswool Baby Blanket Picture of Pink and White Checked Lambswool Baby Blanket

The first ones I found are from Atlantic Blanket, made from lambswool in Yorkshire. I love the pink and white gingham baby blanket (£25), the pink reversible spot baby blanket (£40 made in Ireland) and the pink and white checked baby blanket (£22).

Please note that not all their blankets are made in the UK but they do state on all their product pages the origin of the blanket which is very helpful.

Then I found Smitten who knit lovely baby blankets made in the UK from a blend of 80% eco-friendly bamboo yarn and 20% wool.Picture of Ruby Knitted Baby BlanketPicture of Luella Knitted Baby Blanket I love the Luella and Ruby baby blankets (£66).

More Baby Products to Buy!

I realised time is moving on and we still have a lot to buy! So I spent Saturday trying to source online the rest of the baby items we need from suppliers and makers that manufacture in the UK.

Picture of Hooded Baby TowelI found Huddle & Bliss sell a 100% pure cotton white Hooded Baby Towel (£16) made in England and it can be customised with the baby’s name for an extra £8.

Picture of Baby Bodysuits

They also sell a 3 pack of 100% pure cotton white baby bodysuits (£17) made in England.

I think we’ll need 2 of these packs!

Picture of Mix & Match Baby BibsI’m very tempted to buy their UK made 100% cotton pack of 3 baby bibs (£8.50) Picture of Baby Swaddling Blanketsand their pack of 2 baby swaddling blankets (£19) too!

We still need 4 more baby sleepsuits and Huddle & Bliss sell a mix and match 3 pack in pink, pink check and white (£22) made in the UK.

I do love the Organics for Kids sleepsuits and rompers though! They are gorgeous pink stripes, butterflies or spots and made in the UK from fair trade 100% organic cotton. They are expensive but last 5 months instead of 3! The baby sleepsuits and rompers below are £16.70, £18.20, £17.00 and £17.20.

A Shady Problem!

Picture of Next Butterfly Cut Out Light ShadeI was so annoyed! We had ordered a gorgeous lampshade for the nursery from Next with butterflies, hearts and flowers cut out of a pink fabric.

But until we picked it up from the store we didn’t know where it was made. Surprise, surprise there was “Made in China” on the label!

I must admit I liked the shade so much I thought we’d let this one go and keep it!

Picture of Heart Pendant LampshadeBut thankfully Robert suggested I looked to see whether I could find one made in the UK.

Google served up very little results but I did find Imperial Lighting, a family run manufacturing company in Devon. They have a number of children’s lampshades and the one that caught my eye was the Heart Pendant shade (£18). The only disappointing thing was the delivery charge of £8.50 taking the total for the lampshade to £26.50!

Picture of Shapes and Things LampshadeI then decided to search the UK makers directory on the From Britain with Love website and found quite a few British lighting specialists.

Helen Rawlinson designs, prints and makes lampshades in London. This lovely Shapes and Things lampshade (£45) in powder pink or white is ideal for a nursery. She has also designed ABC lampshades too in many different colours – check out the Children’s Lampshades range here!

Picture of Daisy Pink Lampshade

Bay Design in Hertfordshire has a collection of handmade lampshades including fabulous hand painted and ribbon wrapped lampshades. I liked the Daisy Pink lampshade for £34.

Picture of Cow Parsley LampshadeHannah Nunn is based in Yorkshire and makes beautiful paper cut lighting inspired by nature and I love this Cow Parsley lampshade (£57).

So back goes the Next lampshade and then the only problem is trying to choose one from the UK made ones I’ve found here!

I then looked at Etsy (www.etsy.com) to see if there were any UK based card makers and found paperspice! There are some gorgeous baby card designs here, which can be customised and then supplied as a digital file for you to print off at home or give to a professional printer to produce for you.

Picture of the Bird Nest Baby Shower InvitationsI particularly liked the Bird Nest Baby Shower invitations (in pink!) and the Owl Girl Baby Shower invitations (both approx. £10.05).Picture of Baby Owl Girl Baby Shower Invitation

It’s certainly going to be very hard to choose which ones to buy!
