We’ve Bought More UK Made Baby Stuff!

Picture of Avent Breast Milk and Food ContainersI was a little over excited today when I was in Mothercare! I wasn’t intending on buying anything but they had a 3 for 2 offer.

I had been to Next to pick up a nursery light shade we had ordered but it had not arrived at the store, which was annoying as I’d made the trip into Coventry just to pick it up! So feeling cheated out of a purchase, I was keen to find something in Mothercare that was made in the UK that I could buy!

Picture of Avent Newborn Starter Bottle SetI remembered Avent have a large manufacturing factory in Suffolk, England and I had seen a box of Avent Breast Milk Containers that I thought we probably needed. Then I found they had the Avent Newborn Starter Bottle Set (£25.54) and Electric Bottle Warmer (£39.99) we had on our list to buy. I realised I could get the Breast Milk Containers (£8.49) for free on their 3 for 2 offer. I checked the boxes and found a lovely “Made in the UK” label on them all.

Picture of Avent Bottle WarmerHowever, I thought I would check with Robert the price I had put in our Baby List for these items, so I phoned him. He found that we were going to buy the Newborn Starter Bottle Set for only £12.99 and the Electric Bottle Warmer for only £15.65 from a local, independent retailer, Kiddisave. So even with Mothercare’s 3 for 2 offer we would be massively over paying for these items, so back on the shelf they went!

Picture of Precious Bear Baby BathPicture of Precious Bear Top 'n' Tail BowlI was very pleased when I found Mothercare had some baby baths made in the UK so I selected the “Precious Bear” range. I bought the Baby Bath (14.99) and the Top ‘n’ Tail Bowl (£6.99) with the Breast Milk Containers (£8.49). So I got the Top ‘n’ Tail Bowl free on their 3 for 2 offer.

Picture of Stokke Xplory Adaptor for Maxi Cosi Car SeatRobert decided while he was online, looking at the other items on the Kiddisave website, to order them along with the Maxi Cosi Car Seat Adaptors for our Stokke stroller (£29.95).

So we bought 5 items today that are made in the UK and 1 item made in the Netherlands. Quite an achievement I think!

Baby Things Given To Us

Picture of Blankets and SheetsWe have received very kind donations of baby blankets, sheets, clothes and a steriliser from our friends.

I have looked at all the labels on each item and found out as much as I can about where they were made.

We have been given:

  • 2 Cellular Blankets (Yellow and Cyan) from Mothercare – Made in the UK
  • 1 Cellular Blanket (White) from IKEA – Made in India
  • 1 Cot Bed Sheet (Yellow) from Mothercare – Made in Turkey
  • 2 Cot Bed Sheets (Yellow) – label washed away!
  • 2 Flannels (White) – no label
  • Blanket (White with Pink Flowers) – Made in China
  • Floor Blanket (Blue) from Marks & Spencer – Made in the UK
  • Floor Blanket (Pink Quilted) – Handmade in Devon

Picture of Avent Steam Steriliser and BottlePicture of Baby TrousersWe have also been given an Avent Steam Steriliser and feeding bottle, both of which I found were made in England!

This very kind gift has saved us £39.99!

Picture of Changing MatIn addition we’ve also been given these gorgeous baby trousers for a 3-6 month old (from George at Asda and made in China) and a lovely changing mat with ducks on it (no label).

So that’s 6 items made in the UK, 2 items made in China, 1 item made in India, 1 item made in Turkey and 5 items with their country of manufacture unknown!

Then we Placed an Order with Mothercare Online…

Picture of 6 Mothercare ProductsMothercare were doing a great sale and we looked down our list of things we needed and found quite a few items were in discounted on their website.

So, again without thinking about where the products were made, we place an order for:

  • Medela Swing Electric Breast Pump (10% off)
  • Avent Digital Room and Bath Thermometer
  • Baby Bouncer Seat
  • Snowsuit (42%)
  • 3 Dresses (up to 40%)
  • Travel Changing Mat

As you can see some of the discounts were big and some of the dresses were very cute!

Once the order was delivered to our home we investigated all the labels to see where they had all been made. Unfortunately everything except the Medela Swing was made in China. The Medela Breast Pump box states its country of origin as Switzerland but that could mean it was boxed there not necessarily made there. I can’t open the box as it can’t be returned if the label is broken and expressing and me might not get on okay!

So we decided to return 2 of the dresses as they were a bit light and more for summer than winter (and made in China!). Also I’ve decided to make some baby dresses so we really didn’t need them that much.

Regarding the other items we have, at the moment, decided to keep them and are going down under the “failure” list of products not made in the UK and hopefully from here on we can avoid products made in China and India!
