Nearly New Sale Nightmare!

Picture of Nearly New Sale Organics for Kids SleepsuitIf you like queuing for ages (to get in and to pay) and getting shoved about by crazy women racing around for bargains – then a NCT nearly new sale is for you!

We arrived 20mins before the start and had to queue around the building to get in! People took children in buggies, babies in car seats and babies strapped to themselves into the sale with 2 large NCT shopping bags to grab whatever they deemed to be a bargain! It was a fight of the bumps with very pregnant ladies shoving into each other! It was chaotic and not very enjoyable to say the least!

Picture of Nearly New Sale BibsTrying to look at labels to see where things were made was almost impossible but I did manage to get an Organics for Kids sleepsuit for £1.50 (£18.20 new, made in the UK), 2 packs of 2 bibs (Pink Pig Clothing, made in the UK) for £1 each, a Powell Craft hooded towel for £1 (£9.99 new) and some Mothercare baby coat hangers for £2 (£4.99 new).

Picture of Nearly New Sale Hooded TowelI’ve sent an email to Powell Craft to find out where their products are made as there was no indication on the label. I received a disappointing reply this morning saying they make their products in Kashmir (India). The Mothercare coat hangers I suspect are also not made in the UK but will have to go into the “unknown” category!

Picture of Nearly New Sale Coat HangersWe then waited another 20mins to pay for our items in a hot, cramped corridor full of parents, crying babies and large shopping bags! We were asked 3 times if we wanted a plastic bag at the paying counter but explained that we wanted to be good to the environment and would be fine hand carrying our very few items out to the car! That was a bit of a trauma because then we had to be labelled up as paid and got stopped by a rude woman at the exit telling us we had to pay for our items, which we duly informed her we had but were trying to be environmental by not using loads of unnecessary plastic bags!

Challenge Update

Picture of Baby Products Made In Pie ChartTime for an update on our challenge I think! Since the last post we have bought 5 more baby products made in the UK and 1 made in Europe so the results should be getting better.

Of the 36 baby items we have so far:

  • Made in the UK: 15 items (inc. 6 items given to us and 1 handmade by us)
  • Made in China: 8 items (inc. 2 items given to us)
  • Unknown Origin: 6 items (all given to us)
  • Made in Europe: 5 items
  • Made in India: 1 item (given to us)
  • Made in Turkey: 1 item (given to us)

Now we are getting somewhere! 41.7% of all the items we have bought so far are made in the UK!

Hopefully we can get over 50% and start heading towards 75%!

I’ve just about decided that I’m going to return 2 baby products we ordered online from Mothercare that are made in China; the travel changing mat and the last baby dress. Once I have returned them the number of baby items made in China will only be 6.

The Results So Far!

I thought it was about time to count up the baby items we have and post the results of how we are doing with the challenge!

Picture of Baby Items Made In Pie ChartThe baby items we have so far:

  • Made in the UK: 10 items (inc. 6 items given to us and 1 handmade by us)
  • Made in China: 8 items (inc. 2 items given to us)
  • Unknown Origin: 6 items (all given to us)
  • Made in Europe: 4 items
  • Made in India: 1 item (given to us)
  • Made in Turkey: 1 item (given to us)

Only 33% of all the items we have bought so far are made in the UK!

27% are from China, 13% are from Europe, 3% from India and 3% from Turkey.

I’m pleased that we have bought or been given baby products from the UK more than any other country, but 33% is still very low!

Baby Things Given To Us

Picture of Blankets and SheetsWe have received very kind donations of baby blankets, sheets, clothes and a steriliser from our friends.

I have looked at all the labels on each item and found out as much as I can about where they were made.

We have been given:

  • 2 Cellular Blankets (Yellow and Cyan) from Mothercare – Made in the UK
  • 1 Cellular Blanket (White) from IKEA – Made in India
  • 1 Cot Bed Sheet (Yellow) from Mothercare – Made in Turkey
  • 2 Cot Bed Sheets (Yellow) – label washed away!
  • 2 Flannels (White) – no label
  • Blanket (White with Pink Flowers) – Made in China
  • Floor Blanket (Blue) from Marks & Spencer – Made in the UK
  • Floor Blanket (Pink Quilted) – Handmade in Devon

Picture of Avent Steam Steriliser and BottlePicture of Baby TrousersWe have also been given an Avent Steam Steriliser and feeding bottle, both of which I found were made in England!

This very kind gift has saved us £39.99!

Picture of Changing MatIn addition we’ve also been given these gorgeous baby trousers for a 3-6 month old (from George at Asda and made in China) and a lovely changing mat with ducks on it (no label).

So that’s 6 items made in the UK, 2 items made in China, 1 item made in India, 1 item made in Turkey and 5 items with their country of manufacture unknown!

Debenhams Baby Clothes

Popped into Debenhams yesterday in the vain hope that their baby clothes might be made in the UK!

They had a lovely selection of Jasper Conran designed baby clothes but looking at the labels I found they were made in China, India or Egypt.

That’s another high street store off our list!
